It was assumed already that Sony had sold more than 90 million PlayStation 4 consoles by the end of this fiscal year (ending March 31 2019), for the company to then tackle the historical milestone of 100 million for the next FY - a figure only reached by a very select few home systems. But the console is holding its own really well, backed by a constant stream of triple-A exclusives such as God of War or Spider-Man, that it didn't even want to wait for the new calendar year to reach that milestone, three months before anticipated.
There were more than 5.6 million PS4 units sold during the recent Christmas campaign, elevating the system's LTD totals up to 91.6 million, as made official by Sony this morning. This may not have been their best Christmas period, that is also clear, but an extraordinarily good performance for a console in its fifth year on the market. And even more spectacular software-wise, as PS4 players bought more than 50 million games during that period, making it more than 876 million sold titles in total.
Out of these titles, perhaps the most impressive of the past few months has been Spider-Man. Clearly help by the console bundle at 200 dollars as US Black Friday sale, it took barely two months and a half, until end of November, to reach no less than nine million copies sold, besting other first-party heavy-hitters such as Horizon: Zero Dawn or God of War in terms of speed.
It's yet to be seen if PS4 will lower its amazing selling pace in the new year, be it for the lack of strong releases during the first half, or as the result of an early reveal of PS5 (and the fact that Sony is skipping E3 this year). This is also typically the time in a console generation when we might see permanent price drops, so perhaps that's a card Sony could play should sales dry up.
