It would appear as if EA is moving away from the social game scene, as it has been announced that the Playfish run games The Sims Social, Sim City Social and Pet Society will close on June 14. The Facebook games all started out strong, but EA notes the activity has fallen as of late. Pet Society started in 2008, with Sim City Social starting as late as last summer. At its peak The Sims Social had 50 million monthly users, but as of late all three games have mustered less than 500,000 active daily users.
EA spent $300 million to acquire Playfish in November 2009, a major player on social, but it would seem that investment at the height of the social hype is now pretty much worthless. The Playfish executives have left one after another, and the only EA games left on Facebook are run by PopCap.
Are EA out of the social game, now? Well, perhaps not entirely, but focus has definitely shifted more towards mobile.
