In an interview with MCV, Ubisoft top dog Yves Guillemot said that he'd like to see some brand new consoles coming to market soon and that he believes that the fact that the current generation has been so long is one of the reasons why the games industry is in depression. Brand new consoles would give a new creative spark, he believes, as a new generation means that it is easier to launch new IPs since consumers are more likely to give brand new concepts a chance when paired with new hardware.
"At this stage in the consoles' lifecycles it is possible to do new IP, but it will be more attractive when new consoles come along," Guillemot said. "That's when consumers are more open to trying new things."
"Consumers like the current formats, but there is not enough creativity at the end of a cycle to really spark the business."
There are rumours that Nintendo will be showing some form of hardware at E3 this year, but the official word from the other console makers is that the current generation still has many years left in it.
