While rumours have been emanating throughout the business for months, Sony has yet to officially announce that they are in fact working on a traditional console successor to the PlayStation 4, and with speculation mounting as to whether traditional console hardware has a future, pressure has been on Sony to publicly commit. Now they have.

As Financial Times reports, Sony president Kenchihiro Yoshida has publicly announced that Sony is working on a traditional console successor, saying:

"At this point, what I can say is it's necessary to have a next-generation hardware."

He didn't confirm whether this piece of hardware is in fact called the PlayStation 5, and it's also unclear whether Sony will attempt an xCloud-like service in the future. As we reported yesterday though, Sony has recently had a patent approved for a sort of Vsync technology, so this may well be one feature in this new console.

What do you want to see from new hardware?
