A survey conducted by High Street retailer Game has revealed 1996 as a golden year, after 2,000 polled gamers confirmed it as the most memorable year for gaming.

We came to the exact same conclusion last year; we couldn't think of a more exciting time to be a gamer.

It was the year that saw the release of games such as Tomb Raider, Quake, Mario 64, Resident Evil and many more besides.

Other popular years were 2002 (Halo), 1991 (Street Fighter II), 1985 (Super Mario Bros.) and 1980 (Pacman). The same poll also revealed the Wii (15%) as the most popular console, ahead of Xbox 360 (10%) and PS3 (9%).

Game's community manager Craig Ting said: "It's been brilliant fun looking back through the archive with the gamers of the UK and reminiscing on what a corker of a year 1996 was. It's great to see that the classic games of yesterday strike a chord just as much as the latest releases."
