Launched in March 2000 in Japan and with more than 155 million units sold worldwide (making it the best-selling home console in the process), PlayStation 2 is arguably the most popular platform in the history of video games.

As most us will already know, the console has been out of production since 2012, but despite this, Sony Japan has continued to support the hardware with an after-sales service. That is, until today.

In fact, as reported by IT Media, the company had asked PS2 owners to fill out online forms by August 31 to have their consoles repaired one last time because the service will be permanently suspended, along with its customer service.

PS2s arriving at the PlayStation Clinic service centre in Iwate Prefecture after September 7 will no longer be repaired. Those who hadn't registered online previously had until August 31 to send their consoles.

With this news, the curtain finally falls on one of (if not) the most popular gaming platforms, a platform which gave us some of the most iconic games ever made. Do you still have your old PS2? It so, what were your favourite games? Feel free to reminisce in the comments below.

Thanks, Kotaku.
