Update: According to local law enforcement, the original reports that four people had been killed were inaccurate. Three people are confirmed to have died during the shooting, including the suspect who took his own life at the scene. Nine other people were injured.
The suspect, who is believed to be from Baltimore, Maryland, was named during a press conference this evening, and the authorities are searching his car and home for further information.
Original: It appears that four people have been killed in a shooting during a Madden esports tournament in Jacksonville, with the murders taking place during a livestream event at the GLHF Game Bar in Jacksonville Landing.
According to multiple reports, the sole suspect has been killed at the scene and, although for a time there was speculation that there might be a second shooter, nobody else seems to have been involved. According to Sheriff Mike Williams there are "no outstanding suspects."
Players had assembled at the venue to play Madden 19 and the incident started while the cameras were still rolling, although after a short time the feed apparently shut off while shouts could still be heard from the people in attendance. Twitch has since removed the footage, but it is being reported that the suspect opened fire after losing a match.
Four people are said to have been killed during the incident, while at least nine others have been injured, this according to local news outlet News4Jax.
Esports player Drini Gjoka, who was there representing Complexity Gaming, was shot in the thumb. CEO Jason Lake released the following statement to Vice News:
"We're obviously shocked and saddened by this afternoon's events Our player, Drini, was hit in the thumb but is going to be fine. He managed to escape and run down the street to a nearby gym. He's currently cooperating with the authorities and we will be flying him out of Jacksonville as soon as we are given the green light from the officials on the ground."
Multiple witnesses and victims have shared their stories, and EA has offered their sympathies to all of those involved.
