It's well known that Nintendo isn't a big fan of people emulating their games, and recently the Japanese company has sued two famous ROM websites for old Nintendo consoles - LoveROMs and LoveRETRO - for infringement of copyright, as reported by PCGamer. The reasons behind this legal action were collected in a documentation of about 27 pages, which has been summarised as follows:

"The LoveROMs website alone receives 17 million visitors each month. Such visitors are drawn to the website by the widespread availability of free, unauthorised copies of Nintendo's video games and other highly valuable intellectual property. The resulting popularity of Defendants' LoveROMs and LoveRETRO websites has allowed Defendants to reap substantial ill-gotten gains, including through donations and the sale of advertising on the LoveROMs and LoveRETRO websites."

LoveROMs has removed all Nintendo games from their service, but it's worse news for LoveRETRO, who have been "shut down until further notice" effectively. That's not even the end of it though, as Nintendo wants damages of $150,000 for each of their games, and up to $2 million for each infringement of trademarks, not to mention all domain names and sources of the ROMs.

What's your stance on ROMs and these kinds of websites?
