Bethesda wants to keep Fallout in-house

Don't expect any more externally-made spinoffs like New Vegas.

Most of you already know that it was the RPG specialists over at Obsidian Entertainment who created the post-apocalyptic spin-off, Fallout: New Vegas, and according to a lot of fans it's still the very best game in the entire series. Similarly, Fallout Shelter was developed mainly by Behaviour Digital, and that game has proved hugely successful for Bethesda too.

These earlier successes don't mean that Bethesda has any plans of letting an external studio touch their beloved license in the future. Bethesda's head honcho Todd Howard recently spoke to The Guardian and told the newspaper that the company is a little too big today to let somebody outside of Bethesda fiddle with Fallout.

"I wouldn't say never," he told the paper. "[But] now that our company is so big, it's always better to keep stuff internal... it becomes less likely, but I could never say never. I thought the Obsidian guys did a fabulous job."

The next game in the series is Fallout 76 (you can find out more about it from our own interview with Todd Howard right here), although it isn't an RPG in the same sense as the third and fourth games. Fans eager to see what the studio has been working on will have to wait until November 14, when the game will land on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
