Fortnite was confirmed and then released on Nintendo Switch earlier this week, and the game has already amassed more than two million downloads. Impressive stuff.
What's less impressive is the fact that players who have already started the game on PS4 have found their accounts locked and are unable to take their overall progress with them to new platforms.
The Switch is proving to be a great 'second console' for a lot of people, and a vocal group of players have been venting their frustrations at the seemingly arbitrary lockdown of their accounts; they want to be able to move freely between platforms and there's confusion as to why they can't. The statement released by Sony and sent to the BBC doesn't shed much light on the matter either:
"We're always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience," a spokesperson wrote. "With... more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we've built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles.
"We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms.
"We have nothing further to add beyond this at this point."
As you may have noticed, that statement doesn't really address the concerns of fans with regards to locked accounts and whatnot.
It's a situation that's becoming increasingly troublesome for Sony (after similar frustrations surfaced around Minecraft and Rocket League), and the public outcry has manifested itself this time with a 2% share price drop (that's according to CNBC). That might also be related to the E3 conference earlier this week, which left a lot of people underwhelmed. Either way, this past week hasn't been smooth sailing for the platform holder.
