Robert Downey Jr. is probably best known for his portrayal of Tony Stark in Marvel's expansive movie universe. That's not his only role of note, however, and we mustn't forget that just over eight years ago he also played Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie's Victorian-era action thriller.

In many ways, the movie was overshadowed by BBC's Sherlock TV series (starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman), but the two movies (we're including sequel A Game of Shadows from 2011) still enjoyed some success.

Enough success in fact that a third movie in the historical series is on the go, this according to producer Joel Silver, who said the following to Cinemablend: "Sherlock Holmes 3 is happening, that's coming. That'll probably get done maybe about a year from now we'll shoot that, we're excited."

Did Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law do a better job of bringing Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's colourful characters to life, or are you more impressed by Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of the famous detective?
