A new study has estimated that gamers playing on tablets will spend over $3billion a year on games in 2016 - roughly ten times the $301million spent in 2012.

The research was conducted by Juniper Research, who are predicting that tablet devices will have a pivotal role in driving the industry forward in the years to come, due in no small part to the growing acceptance of differing financial models and in-game purchases.

The research also concludes that a majority of the money spent on tablet gaming will be done so in the US and in China. They also speculate that smartphones will remain in the ascendancy, with predicted revenues of over $6billion by 2016.
