The free-to-play shooter market is getting crowded and a new challenger is Digital Extremes' Warframe - a co-op focused third person shooter that harkens somewhat to the Unreal legacy of the studio's past and that has been compared to Mass Effect 3's Galaxy at War multiplayer.

Digital Extremes are gearing up to an open beta weekend over at Warframe.com - that kicks off on Friday at noon (EST) - 5pm this side of the pond.

One of the more intriguing elements of Warframe is how the characters move - wallrunning and acrobatic stunts are common place - combat comes from every angle.

During the open beta weekend a special edition weapon, the Braton Vandal, will be available for just 1 credit. The weapon, a modified version of the standard Corpus Braton rifle, features lower fire rate, but does more damage.

The objective with the open beta (no key or anything needed), is to stress test the infrastructure ahead of the launch (which shouldn't be to far off if all things go well).

Digital Extremes started out working on a lot of the Unreal games more than a decade ago and more recently they have made games such as Dark Sector, The Darkness II, while helping out on the production of games such as Bioshock 2 and Homefront. Currently aside from Warframe they are also working on Star Trek.
