Teddy Dief made a name for himself by spending years developing the critically acclaimed Hyper Light Drifter. This landed him the prominent job of Creative Director at Square Enix Montreal, who in the past has published games in the Go series, such as Hitman Go, Lara Croft Go, and Deus Ex Go. Apparently, Dief was working on a new project with his team, but this didn't work out.

Dief has announced via his personal webpage that recently the project they were working on was cancelled, and as a result he's leaving Square Enix Montreal. He attributes the cancellation to a shift in the company's strategy:

"My team were working on a game that I deeply wish we could have shared with you. But the business strategy of the studio shifted, and our project was sadly no longer compatible. Thankfully, the talented team remain employed and valued, assigned to other projects. Because of this shift and the loss of our project, I no longer feel this is the place for me to pursue the type of work I aspire to make - the avenues of storytelling in game design I've been trying to explore in my career."

It seems that the project was narratively driven, and that this didn't comply with the new vision for the studio. Would you have liked to see what was in store?
