Brian Fargo, one of the most prominent RPG developers in the industry (he founded both Interplay and inXile), has established a new digital PC storefront called Robot Cache which will allow players to re-sell digitally purchased games. Using blockchain technology users will be able to sell their games, with the original publisher getting a 70% chunk of the sale. Robot Cache will get 5%, while the user will take home 25% of the sale.
When it comes to re-selling games there won't be cash involved directly, rather the system will use a cryptocurrency called IRON that can be used to purchase other games, or can be turned into real-world money. Here's what Fargo had to say about the endeavour:
"Earning any money on the video game resale market is unheard of for game publishers, and earning up to 70%, which is equivalent to the best margins publishers and developers currently receive on today's most popular digital distributions platforms is crazy. Allowing creators to keep 95% of new game sales, and 70% on game resales, provides developers, like us at inXile, with a strong financial stream. This gives us more resources to create new content and new IPs for fans."
Fargo and Robot Cache CEO Lee Jacobson are now looking to raise $15 million to get the ball rolling, with the store scheduled to land in Q2, 2018.
