Back in the late 90's, no light-gun based game was hotter or better than Sega's House of the Dead series (some would argue for Time Crisis, but not us). But the popularity of light-guns ended, the arcades started to vanish and Sega shrunk considerably after the Dreamcast failure. House of the Dead 3 (Xbox) and House of the Dead 4 (arcade, later PS3) would get released, but it just wasn't the same. Then came the gloriously grindhouse-inspired House of the Dead: Overkill (2009, Wii), but that wasn't developed by Sega, but by British outfit Headstrong Games. Plenty of spin-offs including the Typing of the Dead: Overkill have also been released. But it's never taken off like the first couple of games.
Now it seems like Sega is betting on the franchise again as they has announced House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn for the arcades. The cabinet has features like "Vibration Seat" and "Air Cannon", with location tests starting in Japan this Friday. Scarlet Dawn uses Unreal Engine 4 and judging from the pictures, it's a really good looking game.
Given the use of Unreal Engine it's perhaps not that far-fetched to hope for a home version, maybe even a VR one at some point. We doubt it will come with a dedicated light-guns however, unfortunately. But we would love it if Sega proved us wrong.
Would you consider buying a dedicated light-gun for your console to play a game like House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn?
