Nintendo Switch firmware 5.0 leak could well be a fake

Plenty of new features might be on the way, but don't bank on it.

With the announcement of a possible Nintendo Direct on January 11, rumours started to spread almost instantly, making it very difficult to distinguish between real intel and fake news. This uncertainty also applies to a leaked video that allegedly shows off the firmware 5.0 for the Switch, showing off some potentially new features (you can watch it here).

If proved to be genuine, the console could be about to get an internet browser, applications like Twitch and Youtube, voice chat, even a cloud backup service, alongside many other options for personalisation and comfort.

If all of this seems enticing, but we're going to suggest that you remain cautious because the veracity of this video is still very much up for debate. If it turns out to be a fake, it's an extremely well made fake, but there are some signs that the footage isn't authentic.

Some have, for example, noticed that the size of the games is incorrect; Mario Kart Deluxe 8 weighs in at only 2GB instead of the usual 7.9GB. Others suggest is that the apps are only devkit versions that only include the content needed to test the features (like Voice Chat). There's a discussion going on over on Resetera about other aspects of the footage too, if you're interested.

In short, it's probably best to take this one with a pinch of salt while we wait on January 11.
