During today's Nintendo Direct, it was confirmed by Satoru Iwata that the Virtual Console will be launching on Wii U after the Spring update (we first heard about it a few days ago). The full line-up will take a while to become available, but a choice selection of classic Nintendo games (NES and SNES) will be released in the wake of the service's launch, and GBA titles are also coming.
If you already have a game on the Wii, and you would like to transfer it to your Wii U, you can, or you download it again at a discounted price. The original Wii games will continue to work, but for those who want to play their game on the Wii U GamePad, you'll have to purchase it again (albeit at the reduced price).
Balloon Fight, a game that Iwata worked on personally, will be the first title to arrive on the service.
