With the recent release of Middle-earth: Shadow of War, and the reveal of Star Wars Battlefront II's loot boxes, the debate over exactly how major publishers implement monetisation strategies into full price games has been the hot topic of the industry (a former Mass Effect designer has added to this by saying EA's priority is monetisation). Many have spoken out, and indicated that if you want the industry to change, then customers may need to boycott the products. That being said, sales numbers don't seem to have taken a dip, regardless of controversial monetisation measures.
In a statement given to Games Industry, NPD's Matt Piscatella says that there's no indication that loot boxes limit the sales potential of games.
"What [this week's] release does suggest is that the loot box or microtransactions controversy has not yet resulted in clear noticeable limitations of the sales potential of the games with [those mechanics]."
What this essentially means is, that despite many being unhappy with these mechanics, it's not enough to stop people from buying the games they want, and put a dent in the sales figures. Do you think boycotting is the right move?
