Do you remember all those falling green characters from the Matrix films and the video games based on the franchise? They became an instant cult classic and were probably the most common screensaver in the popcultural world of the early 2000s, and now the Wachowski brothers and designer Simon Whiteley have revealed what inspired them in creating this - Japanese cookbooks.

"I like to tell everybody that The Matrix's code is made out of Japanese sushi recipes. Without that code, there is no Matrix," Whiteley explained to CNet.

How about that? It's also worth reminding people that Matrix is being rebooted by the Pacific Rim: Uprising writer Zak Penn. It still has a long way to go, but expect something similar to the sushi recip... sorry, Matrix code to be popular again in a near future.

Do you have fond memories of the green code?
