Many companies want to get a piece of the MOBA action, and one of the most popular titles is League of Legends. Therefore it makes sense that this would be the go-to title for shady developers to try and copy. Plenty of gamers in Asia play games on their mobile phones, so it's a common theme to see MOBAs spring up designed for smaller devices, targeting the Asian markets.
While designing a game in the same genre as something popular is completely fine, the problem lies when developers simply copy characters by only slightly modifying changing the appearance and name but keep the same spells and mechanics. Sometimes it's so obvious that it was a case of when and not if Mobile Legends would be brought to court.
We need wait no longer, as Riot Games has just sued Shanghai Moonton Technology. Their action is backed by a file of several dozens of pages which details, point by point, all aspects of League of Legends that have been copied. They first tried to resolve the issue amicably by asking Moonton to withdraw the game from the different application platforms. The Chinese developer obliged... before re-integrating it a few days later under a slightly different name.
It will therefore be up to the California Court Judge to decide. On Moonton's side, the reaction is quite calm for now as the company has already issued a statement in which it claims its innocence. We'll hear more about it, as Riot should not let this go quite so easily.
