Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan thinks Overwatch is balanced

If it ain't broke, don't patch it.

Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan has been writing about balance in Overwatch, addressing the concerns of some fans who might be worried about the evolution (or the rate of evolution) of the game.

"The most controversial thing I'll say here (hopefully) is that I believe the game is currently balanced," Kaplan wrote. "What I mean is that I don't feel like there are any heroes who are way too strong to the point of breaking balance."

Later he added that "the perception of balance is more powerful than balance itself," before returning to the matter to write: "balancing heroes who are unbalanced is good, balancing heroes just to make them picked more or picked less is not good."

Kaplan then identified the resultant slowdown in the ever-evolving metagame as a potential source of concern for players, in turn prompting this point:

"There are a lot of ways the meta can change but if I had to boil it down to three main ways (that we see in video games at least) I would point to 1) something changes with the balance 2) players innovate new strategies 3) the game forces meta change through mechanics."

Out of those three options, Kaplan thinks that players developing new strategies themselves is the best way to evolve the game and push it forward.

"We are going to make balance changes to heroes when they need it - and we do this more frequently than you give us credit for," he added later in the same lengthy post.

"I just caution against wanting change for the sake of change. The meta will shift soon enough."

If the shifting metagame that has built around Overwatch is important to you, or if you have concerns about the way that Blizzard balances the game, the post is well worth a read.
