Since the release of the Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy last week, fans have found that the game seems more difficult than the originals on the PlayStation One, namely Crash Bandicoot 1. Many players have just speculated that their memories are foggy and the game has always been this difficult, but a user by the name of 'TastyCarcass' on Reddit reckons the collision detection is off.
He has deduced that rather than having flat hitboxes for the character's feet, they're actually shaped like pills. If that sounds confusing, it basically means that the edges are rounded so slipping off edges is much easier to do. If you can recall, in the original games, it was possible to have Crash almost completely off the edge of a ledge with only a small pixel on his heel keeping him on, but now that is impossible. Check out the image below from Imgur user 'SmashHouseOok' for an example of how it works.
"This shape is used as the default for the unity engine and some other engines. It means that rather than falling off things, you sort of slide down them a bit first, even if it's a flat plan," posted TastyCarcass in the Crash Bandicoot subreddit.
This has its pros and cons, as it means you can jump a slight bit further if you utilise the run off, but if you barely make the jump at all then you're likely to slip off without quick reflexes to hop backwards.
