When Nintendo discontinued the NES Classic Mini, many saw that as a sign it was getting a better sequel, and now Nintendo has made the Super Nintendo Mini official. Or Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition, if you want to go by the fancy official name.
"While many people from around the world consider the Super NES to be one of the greatest video game systems ever made, many of our younger fans never had a chance to play it," said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "With the Super NES Classic Edition, new fans will be introduced to some of the best Nintendo games of all time, while longtime fans can relive some of their favorite retro classics with family and friends."
The console has a suggested retail price of $79.99 at US retail and launches on September 29. It comes with 21 pre-loaded games, 9 less than the NES Classic Mini, but then again these more modern games have withstood the test of time a bit better. At least that's our hope. It also comes with two controllers and supports both the Classic Controller and the Classic Controller Pro.
Interestingly the console comes with the previously unreleased Star Fox 2 (you'll unlock it by finishing the first level in Star Fox), which should make this a must-buy for fans of Fox McCloud. EarthBound is also an interesting addition that never saw release in Europe. The same could be said of Final Fantasy III (or VI as we like to call it), which never saw release on SNES in Europe but has since been released on quite a few platforms over here. One caveat here is that the European edition of Super NES Classic Edition could feature a slightly different line-up.
