In just over six years the Playstation 3 has sold a staggering 70 million units worldwide, according to an announcement made by Sony.

The platform, which launched in 2006, passed the 70 million mark on November 4, just weeks after the launch of the new Super Slim PS3. Sony also announced worldwide sales of 15 million units for the Playstation Move motion controller.

Whilst things are going well for the PS3, the same can't be said for the PS Vita. The handheld is still struggling to get the kind of traction anticipated by Sony. According to Japanese stats tracking firm Media Create (via Neogaf) Nintendo's 3DS (187,077) outsold the PS Vita (4,021) by an incredible 47 units to 1, between November 5 and November 11. The disparity is likely due to the fact that Animal Crossing: New Leaf recently launched in Japan on 3DS, but even then the size of the gulf between the two handhelds paints a bleak picture for the future.
