Sony has announced the end of an era in Japan, with the production of Playstation 3 coming to an end. This likely means that we'll also see something similar happen here in the west in the near future, so stay tuned for news on that front.
PlayStation 3 was launched late 2006 (although Sony made Europeans wait until March 2007) and has sold roughly 86 million units worldwide. That makes it the least popular PlayStation console so far, which isn't as bad as it sounds considering the extreme popularity of its predecessors. The various incarnations of PSOne shifted 104 million units, and Sony sold 157 million PlayStation 2s (in the process making it the best-selling gaming console ever). PS4 has so far sold 60 million units.
That makes Playstation 3 eleven years old when Sony pulled the plug, which is what Xbox 360 was when Microsoft stopped the production of the console in April last year.
