Alien: Covenant disappoints in box office debut

Alien prequel unable to match Prometheus.

While still edging past Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 in its box office debut, Alien: Covenant failed to hit the lofty expectations set by its predecessor, Prometheus, bowing out with just $36 million in the United States, for a combined haul of $117.9 million.

It's a top spot, but Prometheus went on to make $51.1 million during its US debut. Additionally, the movie has a $100 million production budget, which is doubled when considered marketing costs, so there's a long way to go until profitability for Ridley Scott's latest.
