Last week, a description appeared on Straight Up Films' site regarding the movie adaptation of Thief, which suggested that a new chapter of Eidos' beloved franchise was in development. In that description - which has since been edited - it was suggested that "a fifth sequel is currently in development to be released in step with this motion picture adaptation."
We're sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but according to Eidos Montréal, there's no new game in the Thief series currently in development, with confirmation coming from David Anfossi, Eidos Montréal's studio head, who posted on Twitter the following message:
"Apparently we're developing Thief 5 game! So now we have a title... We just have to build a team, a budget... Forget it!".
It sure sounds like there's no new Thief game currently in development at the studio, then. At this point, we wonder whether the game cited in the description is a tie-in mobile game (like Hitman GO), or whether an external studio is currently working on something Thief-related.
If that's the case, this statement from Anfossi could well be nothing more than misdirection. Or it could be that there is no new game in the works at all, which would no doubt be sad news for fans of the stealth genre hoping for a return of everyone's favourite sneak thief, Garrett.
