Cliff Bleszinski is one of the more recognisable faces in game development, having been a developer on the Gears of War franchise before moving on to do Lawbreakers, which is currently in development right now. In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, however, he has claimed that the triple A development scene can't continue the way it's going.
"AAA is starting to feel like the American restaurant scene. They're not bad, they're not great, they're just there," he said, referring to how you can find the same chain of restaurant anywhere you go. The same applies with games, as there's a "category of eight games that are getting repeated over and over again."
"$60 [USD] is still a lot of money to ask people for," he added. "And to ask them to make that bet multiple times per year? Gamers are picky, they're smart [...] This is a nearly unsustainable model, unless you're an Activision, 2K or a Sony."
Bleszinski would instead like to see what he calls AA games, or "games that look and play great but pick their battles in terms of budget and marketing," adding that Asia can be a place to provide a lot of funding for these types of projects.
Do you agree that these models are unsustainable?
