Cockroach infested PS4 units are a real problem

Sony's console serves as a perfect if somewhat dangerous home.

We've heard about different kinds of quality concerns over the years, such as the now infamous Red Ring of Death for Xbox 360, the low quality rubber coating on the Dual Shock 4 analog sticks, and the syncing issues some people have experienced with Nintendo Switch.

But it turns out there is a different problem with PlayStation 4 that isn't as widely known, and really isn't Sony's fault either. It turns out they are very suitable as homes for cockroaches. Kotaku has talked to a repair shop in the US that has bags full of roaches removed from PlayStation 4 units and new units with this problem arrive regularly. In fact, it is such a common problem that they now have a "roach fee" of $25 for this specific problem.

It is the design of PlayStation 4 that makes it suitable for roaches, and with the internal power supply it is also warmer and perfectly tempered breeding ground for the animals. The repair shop has seen this with other consoles too, but not nearly to the same extent.

In fact, many PlayStation 4 owners don't even realise they have a roach hotel inside of their consoles as they send it in for repair. It is the roach poop and short circuits that cause the console to stop working. The repair shop is so used to this they know from the smell if roaches are indeed the problem.

If you live in a country or an area where cockroaches are common, storing the console off the floor with good ventilation helps minimise your risk, as does keeping your home clean (roaches like to have good access to food). But if your console breaks down, it may just be cause someone moved in...
