Apple ditching iPhone's GPU and building their own

They're no longer using Imagination Tech chips.

The graphics shown on your shiny iPad, iPhone, or even Apple Watch screens have so far been produced by the GPU chips provided by the British manufacturer Imagination Tech, but it seems that will no longer be the case with future iterations of these and other Apple devices.

As reported by the Irish Times, Apple will finish the current partnership deal with Imagination in two years' time, meaning they're already switching to some other technology for currently in-development models.

The move naturally means a significant blow to Imagination, with their market value sinking and the company now facing a not-so-certain future, as Apple was at the same time the main customer and a shareholder for a brand that will no longer get a royalty for every unit sold.

It was Imagination themselves who unveiled that Apple is developing its own next-gen GPU, but at the same time they don't think they could do just that "without violating Imagination's patents, intellectual property and confidential information," according to the source. With that in mind, both parties could end up being forced to keep collaborating in the future.

Is it a smart move for Apple to develop their own GPU chips?
