Halo: Reach took top spot in the September chart in the United States with 3.3 million units shifted. Overall the industry was down 8 per cent. The only growth was seen in the accessories department were Playstation Move helped with a 13 per cent increase year-over-year.

Unfortunately NPD, who handles statistics for game sales in North America have decided to not officially release hardware or software numbers. On top of this sales of multiplatform titles are now bunched together, making analysis of the performance of the different platforms more difficult. We're sorry that the list isn't as informative as it could have been...

Software:

1. Halo: Reach (Microsoft, Xbox 360) 3,300,000
2. Madden NFL 11 (Electronic Arts, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PSP)
3. Dead Rising 2 (Capcom, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
4. NHL 11 (Electronic Arts, Xbox 360, PS3)
5. FIFA Soccer 11 (Electronic Arts, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, NDS)
6. Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (Square Enix, PSP)
7. Mafia II (Take-Two, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
8. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (Activision Blizzard, PS3, Xbox 360, NDS, Wii)
9. Metroid: Other M (Nintendo, Wii)
10. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard, Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

Only hardware numbers for Microsoft and Nintendo platforms have trickled out, but NPD's Anita Frazier did note that both PS3 and PSP were up on weekly average compared to last month. In the case of the PS3, Move probably did it's part to raise the numbers, while Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep should have help push PSP sales somewhat.

Hardware:

1. Xbox 360 484,000
2. Nintendo DS 403,000
3. Wii 254,000

(PS3 and PSP have no data)
