User reviews both on Steam and on Metacritic/IMDB can be a problem. Why? Because a lot of gamers and film fans either give an unreasonably low 0/10 or an unreasonable high 10/10, something that makes it hard to really take the overall user score seriously.
Steam is changing this now, or at least to some extent. Now, review scores will no longer include any reviews by those who received the game for free. This is strictly concerning scores though, as everyone will still be able to write a review and the text will of course show up on the official game page, just without the actual score (unless you paid for it). According to Steam owners Valve, they changes are made to "better reflect the sentiment expressed by invested, paying customers." Or just to try and deter trolls. Who knows.
Will this stop user scores being plagued by those not taking it seriously?
