Nintendo are likely celebrating a successful launch following this weekend as UK numbers indicate a strong opening weekend.

According to GI.biz, the Switch sold around 80,000 units during its opening weekend in the UK, which should be considered a strong first weekend given the circumstances.

First off, the figure doubles the amount of Wii U systems sold on its launch weekend. At the same time, it's not as high as its highly-successful handheld predecessor, the Nintendo 3DS, which shipped more than 100,000 units around this time six years ago, nor does it approach the launch sales of PS4 (250,000) or Xbox One (150,000) during the holiday season of 2013. But then again, demand and stock have to be taken into account (it's been tricky to secure a Switch without pre-order).

Remains to be seen if demand can be kept up through the typically difficult months that follow after launch, but Nintendo are no doubt hoping that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2 will keep interest high in their new console.
