Nintendo's third home console, the Nintendo 64, was originally released in Japan on June 23 1996, but us Europeans didn't get to buy it until March 1 1997. Yes, that's 20 years ago to this day, and we feel it's worth mentioning, even in the midst of the Switch launch.
The N64 marked the transition from pixels to polygons for Nintendo, as well as being the console to set Mario loose in a 3D environment in Super Mario 64. It was also the home of great Rare classics such as Banjo-Kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark, and not to mention GoldenEye 007 - the game that paved the way for first person shooters on consoles such as Halo: Combat Evolved.
We here at Gamereactor remember the N64 as a vital part of our youth, and wish to congratulate the console on its 20th anniversary. What's your fondest memory from the Nintendo 64?
