The Nordic Ministry council and Nordic Game Program have decided which 8 of the 63 applicants deserved their funding the most. The winners have come up with exciting new concepts on a variety of platforms, some winners are veteran companies like Southend while others are start ups.
Here is a list of the grant winners and how much money they will receive. The money is not meant to fund the whole development in most cases, but it is rather there as a help towards making a prototype strong enough to win a publisher.
"Aquatic Ambience", developed by Chiralion Oy (Finland) for a variety of mobile-phone platforms. DKK 300,000 (€40,000)
"Boingo", developed by Black Drop Studios AB (Sweden) for PC and Xbox 360. DKK 300,000 (€40,000) (pictured)
"Brothers", developed by The Story Lab AB (Sweden) for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. DKK 500,000 (€67,000)
"Furiae - Uppvaknandet", by Resolution Interactive AB (Sweden) for Nintendo DS. DKK 300,000 (€40,000)
"IloMilo", by Global Southend Productions AB (Sweden) for Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, PC and mobile phones. DKK 500,000 (€67,000)
"Invasion Europe", by Sauma Technologies Oy (Finland) for PC. DKK 400,000 (€54,000)
"SuperDoodler" by Earthtree Media AS (Norway) for Nintendo DS. DKK 400,000 (€54,000)
"Vikings of Thule" by Gogogic ehf. (Iceland) for PC. DKK 400,000 (€54,000)
There is not much known about most of these titles, but Boingo is an interesting 2D concept that has already achieved some publicity, while Brothers is a collaboration between The Story Lab and Swedish movie director Josef Fares (Jalla! Jalla!, Kopps). This time around there was no love for Danish game developers as Sweden captured 4 grants, Finland 2, Norway and Iceland one each. It is also interesting to see to original Nintendo DS concepts being awarded funding.
Let's hope we see more from these games in the future, and all the best to the 55 applicants who didn't receive funding this time around. It's nice to see that there is so much innovative thinking in the Nordic gaming industry.
