Francis Ford Coppola and his American Zoetrope studio are known for making films for close to 50 years, but now they want to try their luck in video games.
The studio has announced that they are teaming up with an impressive team of game industry veterans to turn the classic Apocalypse Now film into a crowdfunded psychological horror RPG. We're talking notable people who worked on Battlefield, Far Cry, Fallout: New Vegas, Gears of War, The Witcher, Wasteland 2, and other well-known games, so they seem to have found a talented team of developers here.
Their goal with the game seems to be blending American Zoetrope's cinematic storytelling with a gritty and realistic role-playing game. We'll be controlling Captain Benjamin Willard, and experience his now iconic journey. Those of you who have seen the film will probably understand that this will lead to something similar to a survival horror game where we have to manage our limited resources while experiencing some horrific sequences, however, now we'll get to make the choices in these situations. They want us to mould our own unique version of Willard within the loose confines of the film story, and unlike many other RPGs, the emphasis is not choosing dialogue options, but rather actions and postures. Each choice may affect him both physically and mentally, which will impact the gameplay.
As you might have guessed, this won't be a run and gun game, but more about stealth and careful considerations, as they want to reward us proceeding cautiously and managing our limited resources with care. The same goes for the people around us. Our actions will affect how they behave towards us, and their willingness to help.
Being able to experience the classic film in interactive form, while also being able to diverge from its original narrative definitely sounds interesting. Their Kickstarter goal is $900,000 US dollars, so we'll see if others agree when it ends in 29 days.
What other classic films would you like to see made into video games and why?
