Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) is a mod, but instead of adding changes to the game directly, it allow other modders build their code over it. In effect, it's like a mother-mod used by a lot of people back on the days of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but it didn't work with the new enhanced, 64bit version of the game that arrived to PC along with PS4 and Xbox One.
But recently, the team behind the mod announced that the new version, called SKSE64, could be out in beta form in mid-March. There is a demonstration of the new features in this video.
This is what the creators had to say: "Skyrim Special Edition has been released, and the original SKSE will not work with it. We are creating SKSE64 for the new 64-bit Special Edition. We appreciate your patience while work continues. Currently we estimate a mid-March time frame for a beta release of SKSE64. Above is our latest video update."
As PC Gamer mentions, a lot of Skyrim mods rely on SKSE, with SkyUI being one of the most important of them. The 64bit version will allow developers refresh their old software and re-release it for Skyrim Special Edition.
