The French didn't have it easy, and neither will we.

Last week DICE teased the upcoming Battlefield 1 expansion by posting a piece of concept art on Twitter. This came with the message "Soyez prĂȘts", which means "be ready" in French. Now we have even more concept art, and some thoughts about the expansion.

The first two concept pieces have taken inspiration from the Battle of Verdun. Around one million shells were fired in the opening barrage of this fight, which created massive forest fires around the fortified city and the battlefields surrounding it. Soldiers tell stories of being able to see these fires from far away, and DICE really wants to capture that initial fighting in a battle that came to be known as the Devil's Anvil.

They also want to show how these shells and artillery strikes pulverised the ground, turning the earth into a shattered lunar landscape. This forced the soldier to build trenches, tunnels and underground fortresses underneath. These environments are something we rarely see in a Battlefield game, but DICE seems eager to try it out.

The third one shows how villages like Samogneux and entire forests were laid waste after the initial battles. Soon it'll be our turn to experience initial these intense attacks in the cold February of 1916 for ourselves.

We're also getting a new set of maps that captures the massive French tank assaults. The fighting revolves around key bridges over the Aisne River and DICE teases that "something big lurks around the village of Fismes."

There is also art that has taken inspiration from the heroic garrison inside of Fort Vaux. Fighting a tough battle with grenades, flamethrowers and poison gas for every inch in the dark in those underground corridors must have been horrifying. Get ready to feel your heart pumping for yourself when They Shall Not Pass launches in March.

What kind of areas do you want to see more of?
