Final Fantasy XV suffers a slow start in Japan

It's the lowest launch sales in the series for a while.

We already knew that Final Fantasy XV has been a hugely successful launch for the series, with over 5 million units shipped on the first day. While these are truly amazing numbers, it must be mentioned that it was the first game in the series with a simultaneous launch worldwide, which does facilitate that sort of record.

But as it turns out the game wasn't as popular everywhere in the world, especially in the homeland of Japan. Media Create (via NeoGAF) reports that 694,000 (690,000 of those being PlayStation 4) were sold during the first week, and that's the lowest first week number for a game in the series since the days of the Famicom. As a comparison, Final Fantasy XIII sold 1.5 million during its first week, which is more than twice as many copies with only slightly more consoles in the Japanese market (4.28 million PlayStation 3 consoles at the time of the Final Fantasy XIII launch).

Since Final Fantasy XV has a slightly more Western feel to it than previous games, this may not come as a shock, but it also shows the state of home consoles in Japan. If you want to know more about the game, we suggest you check out our review.
