During PlayStation Experience 2016, one of the games that really caught the attention of PlayStation players was The Last of Us: Part II, the sequel to Naughty Dog's masterpiece published in 2013.

The teaser trailer was only shown a couple of days ago, but already a lot of fans have begun to formulate some weird theories about its plot, and the meaning that the short and intense teaser hides.

According to some theories, also fuelled by statements made by Neil Druckmann in a PSX panel - who said the player will take control of Ellie, and that the young lady is driven by hatred and revenge - there are potential clues in the video, clues that give the impression that Joel is dead, and that possibly the figure we saw in the trailer was a ghost, a sort of spiritual guide who accompanies her.

According to these theories, Joel will be killed at the beginning of the second game and his presumed death will make Ellie violent and seek retribution, something that in some way explains her bloody look.

Anyway, some users on Reddit don't believe this theory, and some outlined their reasons for disbelieving it, saying things like "From a game design perspective, Joel cannot be dead;" "I don't think that Joel is dead in the trailer;" "F***ing hate the Joel is dead theory;" and "Joel isn't dead. The main reason? You not being a genius for your theory because it's FAR too obvious."

But other users still argue that Ellie believes that Joel is real in order to help her cope with the trauma she suffered during the previous game.

"Ellie will be much different in this game than in the first one," said user nerveonya. "Her actions [fueled] by hate, hate of Joel's killers, hate of Joel himself, and hate of herself, for allowing herself to get that close to someone. In terms of emotionally opening up to people, that's never going to happen again. And we are going to be getting a few cool scenes of Ellie angrily yelling at Joel for leaving her alone in this world."

Obviously, it's just speculation, and nothing in here has been confirmed by the studio, but certainly the expectations surrounding this game are huge and it's nice that the community has begun to daydream while we're waiting for it to release. In the meantime, will we get a more plausible theory relating to game's plot? Time will only tell.
