No season pass will be required for Titanfall 2's DLC

"We're not going to split the playerbase up."

Titanfall 2 is out now (you can read our review here) and we recently talked with Respawn's Mackey McCandlish about their plans for DLC in the future. He revealed that they are taking quite a different approach to additional content, especially in regards to pricing for DLC.

"With the first game we did three waves of DLC, each one three maps, and we found that that created four times four different possibilities of what configuration of content people can have, which made it really hard to do matchmaking," McCandlish said. "So since I was a developer I got the DLC for free and I was sitting there trying to get a match and I'm not getting any DLC matches because there's not enough of the DLC players in there, so this time we're going to do some more maps but there just going to be free for anybody who has the game. I think it's really good to get that message out there because I don't think everyone knows that yet. Whereas the competition is still charging for maps, we're saying stick around we're not going to split the playerbase up."

"So there's still resources to explore a bit and support the game. Again it's going to depend on not just how the game does but also what it feels like the game needs at that point. So that'll help to determine how much more resources and where we put them after the game comes out."

A blog post on the official Titanfall website reiterated this information, and among the ten ways that Respawn claim that Titanfall 2 is a different shooter, there is this section:

"No Season Pass required: all maps & modes will be free in Titanfall 2 Multiplayer. This means no splitting up the community and it all starts with the legendary Angel City map, remastered from the original Titanfall. This means once you've purchased Titanfall 2, your investment includes a full single player campaign, the full multiplayer maps and modes, and long-term support with no hidden costs. You can pre-order the game to play three days early, but it will never cost you extra."

What do you think of this approach? Is this enough to get people to play Titanfall over its competitors?
