The reveal trailer for a project called Sonic Utopia popped up a few days ago, taking the Sonic fanbase by storm. Even at less than three minutes long, the video made Sonic fans dream again about how it would be to have a classic Sonic platformer game in a 3D open world.

Sonic fans Murasaki Fox and The Great Lange developed "an experiment that not only tries to expand on Sonic gameplay in an intuitive way in 3D, but also aims to capture the best of Sonic's style and tie it together in a cohesive experience". Even though the artstyle is clearly inspired by Sega's original games, almost everything in this prototype has been created by them, from game engine to models, animation, textures and and music, they say.

You can see the video on YouTube which comes from a demo that is currently available to try out at this link. Is it the ideal remake of a classic Sonic game from Megadrive into a 3D open-world game?
