A few years have passed since the original launches of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and Sony and Microsoft are now looking to boost performance with updated versions of their consoles. The PlayStation 4 Pro arrives this November, while Microsoft aims to release Project Scorpio next fall.

While PlayStation 4 Pro's increased performance comes from a faster GPU unit, the Scorpio console will provide a more substantial upgrade across all the hardware components. The end result is Scorpio boasting as much as 6 teraflops of computing power, while the PS4 Pro lands at around 4.2 teraflops. Additionally, speaking in an interview Xbox boss Phil Spencer made sure to stress that Xbox Scorpio will be a "balanced" machine.

In a not too subtle jab at rival Sony, he points out that improving the console is not simply a matter of increasing the numbers (the amount of teraflops) but also a matter of finding the balance between the components.

He finishes up by reiterating that the increased power of Xbox Scorpio will give us games that look and run differently than today's games, and you don't have to reach far between to lines to find the implication that the PS4 Pro won't be able to keep up.

Meanwhile Sony is substantially ahead of Microsoft in sales this generation, and many believe Scorpio's extra processing power won't be enough to bridge the gap. After all, the console is planned for release almost a full year after the PS4 Pro, at which time Sony may want to start dropping hints of PS5, or is that way too soon?
