Update: The subreddit is back. As you were.

As of now the No Man's Sky subreddit, /r/NoMansSkyTheGame has been closed down and set to private. One of the Mods took to the subreddit in a last post to explain why he had decided to essentially shut it down even though it had over 150,000 subscribers.

This was what Moderator 'r0ugew0lf' posted before the subreddit was set to private;

"So I purged the subreddit. It's become a hate filled wastehole of no actual discussion. It's not what we intended it to be and I don't like providing a platform for hate. I'm sorry to everyone who used the subreddit as intended but you are now in the majority. I'm sure you can find a different place to discuss this game. It's not hard. This was my decision and mine alone. The other moderators tried to sway my opinion but cynicism got the best of me as usual."

The closure has drawn the attention of Reddit's community team, which suggests the possibility of the subreddit getting reinstated, but for now it remains offline. Moderator 'r0ugew0lf' has since blamed the lack of mod support on Reddit as one of the reasons why it closed down stating that they were left without any moderator tools to deal with a toxic community and the hate they were getting on the subreddit.

Members of the community have since accused 'r0ugew0lf' of trolling the community of the controversial game and are not convinced by his explanation for the deletion. This is not the first time the subreddit has made the news either. Back when the game was reported to be delayed by news outlets /r/NoMansSkyTheGame erupted with anger and reportedly death threats were made.

Since the subreddits demise a new subreddit has opened up to replace it and already has 7000 subs. Simply titled /r/no_mans_sky here is what Redditor 'iborret' posted about the new community;

"With /r/nomansskythegame set to private, /r/no_mans_sky is now the default subreddit for No Man's Sky. Make sure to subscribe here and welcome all to your new home! There will be a lot of improvements to the sub over the coming weeks so stay tuned."

The community remains but controversy still surrounds Hello Games' space explorer, with many people still waiting for Sean Murray to address recent criticisms of the game, so only time will tell what he future will hold for No Mans Sky. Will you miss the subreddit?
