Since Overwatch launched back in May, console players have been making complaints about how aiming works for controllers. After all this time, it seems Blizzard are finally going to make a change.
Previously, thumbstick acceleration ramped up exponentially the further from the centre it got, resulting in some extremely quick unintended turning. But a new patch on the game's PC testing realm, the PTR, has updated aiming for controllers to fix the issues.
Players can now switch between two aiming modes: Dual-Zone and Exponential Ramp. The latter is just the old aiming style, but Dual-Zone mode, which is to be the new default, has made the much needed changes.
According to the PTR patch notes, with the new style, "the vast majority of the thumbstick's range moves with reduced sensitivity and relatively high acceleration. However, when the thumbstick crosses to the outer 10% of its range, it will move with high sensitivity and relatively low acceleration."
Dual-Zone mode will likely make it easier for players to aim precisely, but still allow for quick turning. As with all PTR changes, though, the current state of things is not final, and could well be subject to alteration. It is also worth mentioning that PC and Console development of Overwatch is separate for the most part, but it can be safe to assume that this controller update will make it to a console patch in the future.
What do you think of the changes? Will you be using the new aiming style, or stick with the older style?
