HMV sales have dropped 11.6% over the last 20 weeks when compared to last year. The retailer has blamed a quite summer, as well as The Olympics, The Jubilee and the Euros for the summer slump, although they did reveal that their market share in music, DVD and games had actually increased.

Chief exec Trevor Moore was quoted by MCV as saying: "These numbers reflect the challenging markets in which we operate. However, the like for like decline was less marked towards the end of the period and we should be helped in the remainder of the year by a strong pipeline of new releases in the music, DVD and games markets ahead of Christmas."
