Microsoft has patented a "Wearable Electromyography-Based Controller," adding fuel to the speculation surrounding the potential capabilities of the Xbox 720.
In June an internal document was leaked that outlined potential plans for the next-gen console. Kinect V2 and augmented reality glasses were both mentioned, but this more recent report from IGN points to a patent application that details a "human-computer interface".
The patent describes the technology as follows:
"In operation, the Wearable Electromyography-Based Controller is donned by the user and placed into a coarsely approximate position on the surface of the user's skin. Automated cues or instructions are then provided to the user for fine-tuning placement of the Wearable Electromyography-Based Controller."
If these early reports accurately represent Microsoft's plans for their next console, then it appears that the platform holder is being incredibly ambitious. Wearable computing equipment isn't exactly bleeding edge, it's been around for a while now, but never before has a major company thrown their weight behind the idea. We await the results with interest.
