Microsoft has agreed an out of court settlement to the tune of $10K with a woman who found herself upgraded to Windows 10 despite not requesting it.
Teri Goldstein's computer automatically updated to Microsoft's new OS, but the update failed, and the performance of the PC slowed considerably, would crash, and then be unusable for days at a time. Naturally, that didn't do her travel agency business much good, and so she initiated a legal challenge for loss of earnings and a new computer.
"I had never heard of Windows 10," Goldstein explained to The Seattle Times. "Nobody ever asked me if I wanted to update."
Microsoft, not wanting the expense of the court case and the publicity that would have gone with it, opted to instead pay up, to the tune of $10,000 USD. Whether this move will open them up to similar claims in the future remains to be seen.
PC users still using old Windows software have until July 29 to upgrade to Windows 10 for free.
