Blizzard dropped a bomb on a lot of their forum users this week, explaining that in the future they would post there using their real names. There has been a lot of protest against this move, with the forum thread with the announcement becoming the longest one in the forum's history.
Today, Gamasutra posted a statement from an unnamed Blizzard representative, saying that they are listening to feedback from their users and that they "will be carefully monitoring how people are using the service." The representative also added that "Real ID is a new and different concept for Blizzard gamers -- and for us as well -- and our goal is to create a social gaming service that players want to use."
If you had any plans to create an account using a false name, the rep took the time to remind people that doing so is a violation of the Terms of Service - the "Terms of Use agreement requires that players provide us with accurate information, as certain aspects of the customer service we provide (for example, addressing forgotten-password issues) rely on identity verification -- if a player uses a fake name, it would ultimately impact our ability to provide him or her with timely service."
